How to get a
permit to hike the
Mt. Whitney Trail

Hikes occurring between May 1st and November 1st, require permits that are only available through the Mt. Whitney Lottery. The Mt. Whitney Lottery opens February 1st, 2024. The fee is $15.00 per person. You can apply for your preference of date, group size and trip type, and list up to ten alternate trip choice dates and three alternate leaders on one application. Both Mt. Whitney Trail Day Use and Mt. Whitney Trail Overnight are available in the lottery. Overnight trips approaching the mountain by other routes are not in the Mt. Whitney Permit lottery. Any unfilled dates after the lottery are open for reservations on April 22nd, which is also a great day to capture permits as many become available due to cancelations.

Hiking Mt. Whitney via the Mountaineers Route, Lone Pine Creek
North Fork Trail Permits

The mountaineers route is roughly 12 miles round trip and is also a part of a quota system. The route follows the North Fork Trail to the Mt. Whitney chute via Lower Boy Scout Lake, Upper Boy Scout Lake and Iceberg Lake. The route often requires crampons and ice axe in early season. If you are not a seasoned mountaineer we recommend that you hire a local guide service to take you up this route.
