Hikes occurring between May 1st and November 1st, require permits that are only available through the Mt. Whitney Lottery.
The mountaineers route is roughly 12 miles round trip and is also a part of a quota system. The route follows the North Fork Trail to the Mt. Whitney chute via Lower Boy Scout Lake, Upper Boy Scout Lake and Iceberg Lake. The route often requires crampons and ice axe in early season. If you are not a seasoned mountaineer we recommend that you hire a local guide service to take you up this route.
For a multi-day backcountry adventure, there are various ways to approach Mt. Whitney from the John Muir Trail including Horseshoe Meadows from the south and Kearsarge Pass from the North.
